Utah Monsoon Driving
This afternoon I drove through one of the Utah Monsoons that have caused so much flooding over the past few days. I was just driving along under the clouds, when it started sprinkling. Then, after a moment or two, it was suddenly raining hard enough that the water on the freeway couldn’t run off fast enough, and we were in danger of hydroplaning. After a minute or so of heavy rain, it stopped as suddenly as it’d started, and then cleared up rapidly.
Almost Missed His Exit
While driving today, an SUV had been traveling in the far left lane when he suddenly realized that he needed to get off at the exit we were passing. So he hopped across two lanes and barely made the exit.
Weave Lane
The white SUV on the left side caught up quickly to the car in front of him. He elected to pass on the right, but after changing lanes, realized that there was an upcoming car in that lane going even slower. So he slammed on his brakes, hopped back over a couple lanes, and hit the gas.
114th Wreck
Driving through the 114th S and 7th E intersection, I passed a rather recent wreck. The cops had apparently just arrived, and people were still checking the cars. It appeared that one car had been in the intersection when the other light turned green, and had been hit by it (though it doesn’t look like either ran a red/orange light, as there were no tire skid marks, there was not a ton of damage, and the cars were barely dented.
Triple-Trailer Fun
On my drive down I-15 this morning, I ended up behind a semi towing three trailers. It seemed to be having issues drifting back and forth slightly, and any of the minor course corrections were amplified by the number of trailers, such that the final one was going back and forth by almost half a lane each time.
Hazardous Merging
A couple panel trucks were in the right lane where it merged near the California Ave exit on I-215. A car coming in from the onramp on the left was nearly hit by both trucks right in a row as they tried to move over when he was there. Both managed to catch themselves before a collision occurred, but there is some noticeable swerving.
Wrong Exit
This one is a bit harder to see than many (I was further back when it happened), so you may want to expand to fullscreen.
While driving south on I-15 today, there was a red sports car that got stuck in one of the exit-only lanes. The truck next to him was in the right lane of the regular travel ones, and was getting off the freeway. The sports car sped up and tried to pass the truck before the exit, but ran out of room. He tried to move over just as the truck began to exit the freeway, and the two nearly collided. At the last moment, he slammed on his brakes and then hopped over into the right lane of continuing traffic.
Spring Storm and Wreck
While driving early this morning, one of those nice spring storms came up suddenly. It quickly intensified, and I ended up slowing down to about 1/2 the speed limit. At one point, I’m pretty sure it was hailing, though it could’ve just been large raindrops.
After I got past the main brunt of the storm, I came upon a large wreck (right at the end of the video). It was quite severe – it appeared that one car had slid into the wall and then been run into by a small suv. The front of the car was crushed rather badly, as was one side of the jeep.
A bit later in the day, I chanced upon this article on KSL (the accident captured in my dashcam is mentioned about 2/3 down the page).
Later that night, KSL posted a followup article with more information on the lady killed in the wreck. It can be found here. She was a BYU dance teacher.
