Skunk
While driving down I-215 this morning after merging from I-15, I noticed something in the road. As I approached, it scurried right in front of my car. It made a dull metallic thunk as I drove over it, and I saw it rolling around behind me in the rear view mirror.
Notes on the Speed Limit
Recently the speed limits for I-15, I-215, and I-80 in Salt Lake County have increased from 65mph to 70mph (with the exception of a few areas on I-80). This has caused quite the debate on the SL Tribune, Deseret News, and KSL sites.
Under many layers of emotional appeal, opponents of the idea seem to have a few major points:
1 – Decreased safety
2 – Increased emissions
I intend to show that both of these are relatively groundless, at least for the time being. I will also show a few other things that may be contributing to the change. It should be noted beforehand that I’m in favor of the increase.

Trax Trouble
While driving in downtown Salt Lake in the vicinity of the Gateway, there was a lady crossing the crosswalk (against the red light) that nearly got hit by a Trax train. She noticed there were no cars coming and elected to walk across the road; missing the approaching train. Only a short blast of the train’s horn stopped her from running in front of it (the horn isn’t audible because the YT video is muted for copyrighted music playing in the car, as usual).
Hummer H2 Undercover Cop
While getting on the freeway today, I passed a guy that’d been pulled over by an undercover cop. I was quite surprised to see that it was a Hummer H2 undercover cop car, as even SUV cop cars are relatively rare around here.
Clearly Paying Attention
This morning I was driving in the middle-left lane, with an SUV on my right in the middle-right lane. We were both going about the same speed, and had been that way for the past several miles.
Ahead of us was a small car, and we were probably going a good 10-15 mph faster than him – we caught up to him in short order.
As we both quickly approached this small white car, he apparently decided that he needed to get over immediately, so he turned on his blinker and hopped right in front of the SUV next to me.
Had the SUV not immediately slammed on his brakes and hopped to the lane from whence the car came, he would’ve rammed it from behind.
Exit Lane Hop
While on my way to work this morning, I was in the far right lane. There was an SUV in the lane next to me. We were approaching the exit for the SLC airport, when he suddenly decided he had to get off there.
He immediately started changing lanes, and threw on his blinker about half way over. I was forced to slam on my brakes and swerve into the unoccupied exit-only lane to miss the back portion of his vehicle.
Basic Dashcam Info
While browsing the internet today, I came across an excellent article with basic information on dashcams. It goes over the following:
What is it?
Why should I care?
How does it work?
Is it legal?
Additionally, the comments may provide further information.
Lane Challenged
While driving to work this morning, I noticed the car in front of me was weaving back and forth in his lane a bit. He may have been distracted, sleepy, on his phone, or any number of other things, but he apparently wasn’t alert and paying attention to the road. He would drift off to one side, correct with a jerk, and then drift off to the other side.
