Freezing Rain
Thanks to the inversion in the Salt Lake Valley, there was frozen rain this morning before the snow started. The rain fell from the warmer temperatures above the inversion, hit the freezing air and ground, and left a layer of ice. Thankfully the snowplows were out salting the road, so there was only a slick layer of slush rather than actual ice coating everything.
Cop Encounter
While driving in Draper today, a cop car suddenly pulled over in front of me, and it appeared that someone got arrested.
Morning Fog
Driving this morning, I encountered a rather cool fog bank. Initially it doesn’t seem like much (and the camera doesn’t capture it well, making it just look like my lights weren’t working as well), but close to the end there are some lights that illuminate the fog quite nicely. As I got further, it began to “glitter” (basically the fog/smog/inversion condensing and coming down as light flurries of snow), and that made the roads quite slick. Thankfully, I was spared the rush hour drive.
Utah Inversion
With winter comes the inversion, as everyone living in the Utah valleys knows. Here are a couple clips from the morning and afternoon of the past few days. To really get a feel for how much crap is in the air, check out some of my other videos (particularly those from the summer).
As a sidenote, the inversion is not entirely man-made (though doubtless aggravated) – it was there before Utah was settled and was noticed by the early explorers. Doesn’t make it any less nasty though…
Winter Storm Cleon – The Day After
After my video on driving in the storm, I decided to put up a clip from today with some of the same locations. One of the clips includes a car with snow blowing off of it, and how it floats around on the freeway. Some of the clips also have a great view of the newly snow-coated mountains.
Winter Storm Cleon – Daytime Driving
From my previous video, the driving conditions slowly worsened throughout the day. By the time I drove home, there was still quite a bit of snow on I-215 and I-15. Many of the local roads were still coated with snow as well.
In the course of my driving on the freeway, I passed a car that had spun out on the side of the freeway as well as a wreck. After getting off of the freeway, there was a garbage truck that blew through a very “orange” light and a car that either couldn’t stop in time for a red light due to the road conditions, or almost ran it.
Quite a few close calls, but not many actual wrecks. Fairly good for the first major storm. There’s quite a bit of ambient driving, so I’d scan through the video for the interesting parts.
Winter Storm Cleon – Morning Drive
Driving to work this morning, I ran into the first parts of what has apparently been termed “Winter Storm Cleon.” It steadily got worse as I drove, until snow was accumulating on the freeway. The snow made the road slick, but the danger then came from the wind – it was quite windy and that would try several times to blow me off course. I’ll be posting a vid with more clips from later today once I get it finished. For now, enjoy!
Close Turn
Just as I reached an intersection, a car decided to cut across almost the entire road in turning down the opposite direction.
Two Lefts Don’t Make a Right
I was waiting to turn left in the parking lot of the Home Depot on 114th. The car in front of me tried to turn left from the parking lot just as a truck turned left from the center lane on 114th. Both slammed on their brakes, narrowly missed each other, and managed to avoid further trouble getting to their intended turning destination.
